Dūrga is the manifestation of motherly love called to rescue her children. She is the utterly fierce embodiment of all the powers of all the gods, and her special power is rescuing those who are in trouble. While she appears ferocious, she is actually the heart of compassion: her vengeance is aimed at our struggles, rather than ourselves. Dūrga is depicted as a relative of or version of Agni, the heat and fire of awakening, offering, and sacrifice. She is said to glow with it or to be on fire; nothing will deter her and she is the leader of our journey. This sūktam calls on Durga and Agni to carry us across all possible states of grief. We can take complete refuge and comfort in Durga, who can and will carry us with grace.
As with other sūktams from the Mahaanārāyaṇa Upaniṣat, this ends with a Gayatri, the perfection of prayer that can be used on its own as a japa or dharana practice.
